  Weight Loss Programs and Clinics


  The only research study regarding a weight loss program or clinic I have found is a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association in 2003.  There are numerous articles that discuss the FDA's attempts to get commercial weight loss programs to substantiate their claims - the only program willing to be researched was Weight Watchers.  In this study, one group is enrolled in Weight Watchers.  One group is self-help.  After two years, over 25% of the weight loss participants had dropped out of both groups.  The Weight Watchers group had kept off slightly more weight than the self-help group, but neither group had lost significant amounts.  The results show that there would be little difference between this weight loss program and a doctor run weight loss clinic.  In fact, the long term stats of a doctor run weight loss clinic near my office shows better results.  Hypnosis can be used as a wonderful adjunct to either a weight loss program or clinic.  Hypnosis for weight loss is focused on ending cravings and changing behaviors.  With food behaviors addressed, nutritional education and group support are extremely helpful in maintaining long term health.

Hypnosis is a means for a person to gain control of their actions around food and exercise so they can lose weight.  Hypnosis is a tool to help you change your actions so that weight loss will result.

 

Many people that have trouble managing their weight feel like they are constantly fighting their eating habits.  Food choices, portion size, "food addiction", "nervous eating", cravings, binges, chewing speed, and aversion to physical activity, are all things that can have learned behaviors affecting them.  When these habits are addressed, the person re-gains control and achieves weight loss.  Proper nutrition and exercise can become a matter of simple choice rather than a constant struggle. 

 

Hypnotherapy in my Salem, Oregon office, focuses on changing the behavior at the root.  As well as creating new beneficial habits.  Instead of a diet, we can change how a person thinks and acts around food at a deeper level.  This makes the difference.  Weight loss is a natural result of an overweight person gaining control of their habits.

 

Food choices, snacking, portion control, and activity levels are the problem.  Extra weight is the side effect.

 

You know what you should do but feel like doing something different.  Our 'knowing' and 'feeling' can be different, especially when experiencing a craving.  What does your craving feel like?  Those times when you feel out of control.  Have you thought about it?  What does that craving, compulsion, or urge feel like?  Does it want to feel better?  Happy?  Relaxed? Distracted? Excited? Satisfied? Or something else?  There is a feeling to the craving.  And that feeling, that emotion is what the behavior is about.  It can be difficult to figure this out alone, using your analytical mind.  If your analytical mind could figure it out, it would have by now and you wouldn't have a weight problem.  Right?

 

When you are fighting yourself over your food choices it might not feel it can be so simple to change.  I can tell you my story and client stories of successful weight loss, but until you experience it for yourself, it will not make as much sense to you.

 

Having real control of eating habits is a large part of achieving weight loss.  Being free from old habits allows the the opportunity to create new habits.  Eating healthy foods in healthy amounts and making time for physical activity can BE your new habits.

 

When creating your new habits, it is important to gain  information about nutrition, diet and exercise, as well as support.  Information can be gained from research, your doctor, a nutritionist and/or commercial weight loss programs.  Support can be talking with a good friend, self-hypnosis or hypnosis "maintenance sessions".  The initial weight program cost includes monthly meetings in the Salem office that feature guest speakers on nutritional education and group support.  Consistent weight loss takes consistent effort.

 

The time spent in a weight loss session is very important.  It clears room in your mind and creates a new foundation for new behaviors.  After the weight loss session, it is important for you to remain focused on your goals as the new behaviors take root.  To assist in this, weight loss programs will often supply CD's to listen to or teach you different "exercises" to do. In my experience audios and "exercises" are both important.  The exercises are simple to teach and for the client to remember.  The problem was the length of the weight loss CD.  Most weight loss hypnosis CD's are at least 30 minutes long.  This makes them difficult to fit into a busy day and often boring. But, I have found audio support is very important in helping someone achieve weight loss.  Because of this, I created reinforcement audios for weight management (CD or MP3) that average only 7 minutes long.  This makes them very easy to listen to in the morning, before a meal, during a work break, in the car, the common times you may need help with self-control.  The times you most need the extra support.  This makes it realistic and easy to use my audios to help you lose weight.  People say, after spending the few minutes to listen to them, they feel refreshed, rested, relaxed and mentally clear.  If they had any thoughts of uncontrolled eating before, they are gone afterwards.

 

From a few days to a few weeks after the last weight loss session I have follow-up contact with my clients.  I track client weight loss success rates and feedback.  While I have formed my weight loss program with techniques from the top modern hypnotists in the profession, I use the feedback to adapt and improve upon the program.  Taking into consideration, client compliance, ease of use, comprehension, comfort level, success rate and acceptability.  Everyone is able to control eating for a short time.  Your long term weight loss success is my focus.  This may sound noble, but the fact of the matter is, most of my clients come from the referrals of previous successful weight loss clients.  Your long term success results in my continued success here in Salem.

Consumer Awareness in Oregon

 

Oregon is one of the last 13 states that does not have a state certification for hypnosis.  This is both good and bad.  It keeps hypnosis in the hands of those that know it best - practicing hypnotists.  But, it also allows a wide variety of hypnotic techniques and skill levels to be accessible to the public.  Oregon has had this issue in the legislature off and on.  It probably makes little difference to the person in Oregon looking for help.  After all, that person generally cares much more about results than they do about how they get the results.  I only bring this issue up to make Oregon hypnosis clients as informed as possible.  There are many wonderful hypnotists in Oregon.  If you have a bad experience, it is in everyone's interest if you first communicate this with the hypnotist to resolve it.  If not satisfied, report the problem to the Oregon Hypnotherapy Association.  Then, look for a hypnotist you can be confident in.

 

 

Most insurance does not cover hypnosis for weight loss in Oregon.  State employees with a Flex Plan card should now be able to use the card at Glancy Hypnosis. 

 

Further, IRS publication 502 states:

 

"Weight Loss Program

You can include in medical expenses amounts you pay to lose weight if it is a treatment for a specific disease diagnosed by a physician (such as obesity, hypertension, or heart disease). This includes fees you pay for membership in a weight reduction group and attendance at periodic meetings. You cannot include membership dues in a gym, health club, or spa as medical expenses, but you can include separate fees charged there for weight loss activities.

You cannot include the cost of diet food or beverages in medical expenses because the diet food and beverages substitute for what is normally consumed to satisfy nutritional needs. You can include the cost of special food in medical expenses only if:

  1. The food does not satisfy normal nutritional needs,

  2. The food alleviates or treats an illness, and

  3. The need for the food is substantiated by a physician.

The amount you can include in medical expenses is limited to the amount by which the cost of the special food exceeds the cost of a normal diet. See also Weight-Loss Program under What Expenses Are Not Includible, later."
